I launched KB3102810 and then closed the window from the taskbar when it stalled. Secunia will flag these but so long as you have a later one with the green tick, you can ignore them. I have a fair few updates to install now due to this; I can find the updates but Windows Update just won't download them at all. My experience was excellent with these tech people in the Vista department.

The morale of it all: Have patience. Windows Vista Update Not Working Step 3: Start Windows Update service. It worked and found 150 important updates plus 5 optional ones.

My problem got solved. Also some of them (like Internet explorer actually pop up behind all the windows so you need to keep an eye on the taskbar as well.
