Reset the X11 preferences to either use 'millions' of colors or the 'From Display' option, and use X11IRAF v2.0 described earlier.As for the FITS file, it looks just fine and works isn't in the proper byte order, missing padding, etc. Adjust the setting within ximtool as you were instructed by fitz and make the proper adjustments in the actual graphics setting on your mac. Netscape will grab as many colors as possible when it starts so shutting this down before starting ximtool helps quite a bit. XImtool by default will try to allocate 200 or so colors but you can limit this to also help limit the colormap flashing.
