When you convert a drawing saved in paper space, only the objects that are not cut off (clipped) by the edge of the viewport are converted into Visio shapes. It should tell you which AutoCAD version the files is you are opening. I would like to see Visio handle a CAD file import with better integration and the ability to edit that CAD file and maintain it as a dwg or similar without Cannot Open File. Have you tried creating a new drawing with just a line or two and see if that open's in Visio? Visio is therefore completely incapable in my mind of converting to AutoCAD format successfully and reliably.
